Excellent participation in the meeting “Lead-free steels: how to ensure machinability?” during METAL MATERIA 2025, a new B2B trade fair held in Piacenza dedicated to the metalworking sector, covering the entire supply chain from commodities to material processing.
Prof. Marco Boniardi and Andrea Casaroli (Department of Mechanical Engineering, Polytechnic University of Milan), Professor Paolo Albertelli (Polytechnic University of Milan – Department of Mechanical Engineering – MUSP Laboratory), and Engineer Vittorio Boneschi (Quality Area Manager, Trafilix Industries), presented research activities aimed at addressing the current regulatory landscape, which increasingly limits the use of lead in materials. More specifically, for the steel industry, these limitations require innovative and responsible solutions that meet environmental sustainability, health, and safety regulations without impacting machinability, chip removal, tool wear, or productivity.
During the speech by engineer Vittorio Boneschi, "Lead in Metals: An Ever-Evolving International Scenario", illustrated the regulatory framework relating to the restrictions on the use of lead, which have been introduced due to its significant risks to health and the environment.
In this increasingly stringent context, the search for alternative lead-free materials is becoming a priority for user companies; manufacturers are thus driven to seek valuable alternatives to solutions previously considered successful.
Trafilix, as a manufacturer of semi-finished steel products (cold-finished bars), has been working to support its customers:
Trafilix also has the support of Milan Polytechnic, given the importance of defining solutions based on scientific evidence and data analysed with appropriate criteria.
